Toyota Connected
Creating the Konkan Design System for the Toyota & Lexus brands
Helping to build the Konkan design system to match consistency with innovation.
My primary role within the Toyota Connected was "Design Systems Designer" as a part of a six-man team of 3 developers and 3 designers (myself included).
The client
Toyota Connected is a cutting-edge technology company that focuses on transforming the automotive industry through digital innovation. The company specialises in creating software solutions and digital experiences tailored to enhance the driving experience for Toyota and Lexus customers.
With a strong emphasis on user-centric design and advanced technology, Toyota Connected developed components libraries, design systems, and documentation to ensure consistency and efficiency across both brands.
My role
- Conducted a detailed UX audit of Toyota Connected apps to identify inconsistencies (especially within components), laying the foundation for design system development.
- To build the components library and create detailed easy-to-follow design systems documentation catering to both Toyota and Lexus brands, ensuring consistency and efficiency in design elements.
Components
The work
Scope
To conduct a thorough UX audit, contribute to creating the components library of the design system for both Toyota and Lexus brands, and help create an evangelism plan to ensure its use.
Description
My work at Toyota Connected encompassed various aspects of design and user experience improvement across their digital platforms. This included:
Conducting component-specific UX audit: I performed a detailed examination of Toyota Connected apps to identify inconsistencies in components use, serving as the foundation for subsequent design system development.
Design Systems development: I created several components including search bars, bottom sheets and buttons, contributed to the design of several others and documented its guidelines for usage tailored to both Toyota and Lexus brands. This involved defining and implementing standardised design elements to ensure consistency and efficiency in the UI design.
Feedback collection & analysis: I collaborated with other Design Systems designers within my team and UX Designers across other teams to collect feedback and insights.
Continuous improvement & evangelism: I helped create an evangelism blueprint that included timetable for checkins and ways of contributing to the design systems. This iterative approach ensured that design solutions evolved to meet the changing needs and expectations of users.
Outcomes
- The Safety, Security and Navigation project was redesigned, in accordance to the newly created components and patterns in the Konkan design system.
- A comprehensive components library and design systems documentation was created which led to a more cohesive and consistent user experience across Toyota and Lexus digital products.
- The evangelism blueprint was created together with my team lead, Ed as a way of eliciting the design system’s use.
